LAHORE – The Punjab University administration has postponed the syndicate meeting scheduled for April 23. The registrar’s letter states prior commitment by some of the members of the syndicate as the reason of postponement.
However, source privy to situation narrate that offices of the chief minister, chancellor, and Higher Education Department (HED) secretary have been unhappy with the look after Vice Chancellor (VC) Dr Mujahid Kamran in crossing his limits in running the day-to-day affairs of the university.
The syndicate members Javed Sami and Shamaila Gull had written letters to the chancellor, CM, HED secretary and members of the syndicate regarding the unconstitutionality of this meeting. They had cited a couple of decisions of the apex court in this regard.
More than 40 teachers of the university, including PUCIT Principal Dr Syed Mansoor Sarwar, former Law College principal Samee Ozair, ex-members of the syndicate, and former officials of the PU Academic Staff Association had also written a similar letter to the same government officials and the syndicate members.
The teachers had also requested the syndicate members to not participate in the unlawful meeting in order to help avoid an imminent conflict on the day of the meeting. Around 30 teachers of the university had also arranged a press conference on this issue as well as appointment of a lawful acting VC.
The sources further say that the government has started to seriously question the continuation of Dr Mujahid as the look after vice chancellor. It is expected that a decision in this regard will be made after the court decision in the case of the appointment of VCs at four public sector universities, including PU. Justice Shahid Karim is hearing the case. The next date of hearing for the case is Monday 25th April.
